Tooth Fillings

Tooth Fillings or Dental filling is the restoration of decayed, broken or cracked teeth with different materials. It is aimed to regain the functions of the teeth that have lost their substance. This treatment, which is applied before the decayed tissue progresses, prevents the loss of the tooth.

Steps of Dental Fillings

In the first step, the remaining tooth tissue is made ready for filling. At this stage, the decayed tooth should be cleaned or if there is an old filling that has been made before, the remaining tooth tissue should be cleaned. As a second step, the gap that is formed needs to be filled by selecting the appropriate material according to the position of the tooth, its function, aesthetic requirements and the size of the filling. During these procedures, local anesthesia is applied so that the patient does not feel any pain. As a final step, the adaptation of the filling with other teeth is checked. If there is any excess that will disturb the patient, it is removed. Composite filling is the most preferred filling material.

Types of Filling Materials

Tooth fillings materials are various depends on the demand and requirement of the operation. Tooth can be filled with gold; porcelain; silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper); or tooth-colored, plastic, and materials called composite resin fillings. There is also a material that contains glass particles and is known as glass ionomer. This material is used in ways similar to the use of composite resin fillings.
