What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the internal structure of the tooth. This field is commonly known as “root canal treatment.” Endodontics is applied when the pulp of the tooth, called the pulpa, is diseased or damaged. The pulp contains the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue of the tooth.

Endodontic Procedures:

  1. Root Canal Treatment: The most common endodontic procedure involves removing the pulp of the tooth and cleaning and filling the emptied canals. This procedure is typically performed to address an inflamed condition within the inner part of the tooth caused by severe infection, decay, or trauma.
  2. Apicoectomy: When root canal treatment fails or recurring infections occur, the surgical removal of the tooth’s root tip is called apicoectomy.
  3. Pulpotomy: This procedure involves removing only the damaged portion of the tooth’s pulp. It is often used in deciduous teeth (baby teeth) in children.
  4. Retreatment: In cases where a previous root canal treatment has failed or recurrent issues arise, retreatment involves reopening the tooth and correcting and cleaning the canals.

Objectives of Endodontic Procedures:

  • Alleviate or eliminate painful conditions.
  • Treat decay or infection while preserving the natural structure of the tooth.
  • Salvage and protect the tooth before resorting to extraction.

Endodontic procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia, and with advancements in technology, they have become highly effective and comfortable. Endodontic treatment is generally successful and allows for the long-term preservation of the tooth’s functionality.
